One thing I can't find in B9Scrambler's review of the Walnut F1 portable amp is whether the thing remains active during charging; the relatively short life would be acceptable to me if this was the case. Also, come to think of it, does the amount of welly supplied via the volume pot affect the battery life?

Yes, you can use it while it's plugged in. Sometimes this can introduce noise, though, IIRC.
