This has been claimed by others before, but see the announcement (and little else) here.

I saw this also-- sounds a little to good to be true-- especially the mentioned $349 US price for a device that purportedly bypasses the internal DAC.

"Hailed as the "market's first digital player dock to retrieve a direct digital signal from an iPod," it relies on a S/PDIF digital audio out (as well as analog outs) and even includes a set of component outputs for video. Notably, the iPhone and iPod touch will work here too, but unless you've got some mighty fine (or cans)..." loudspeakers

Yes we do have some mighty fine cans!

This could be a killer addition to the iPod line of accessories for all of us.

Based on Wadia's track record, I'd guess it really does what it says it will. Personally I don't see the point in spending so much on trying to get hifi out of an iPod at home, but hey, different people have different needs.

Value your opinion-- you probably know about audio than me.

But why do you say so given Wadia's claim of bypassing the internal DAC. If it has a digital loop out (not saying it does) then you could have a player with possibly greater audio capabilities/possibilities than a computer, right? Because the iPod is battery driven and not subject to electric current and other computer noise (e.g., kernel mixing for Windows).

What do you think?

I didn't intend to knock the iPod's ability to deliver hifi sound;

Same here - I do not intend to knock CD/computer setup (I have a computer setup currently).

I just wanted to understand your opinion and learn. Even though I do not know you it seemed you expressed a well considered opinion-- so it was a learning opportunity. Thanks!!

Having my cd's in a 400 disc dvd changer, and sorting thru it's slow menu, awaiting the thing to spin to the disc then waiting to que up is SLOW. On my Ipod the time is cut WAY down.

Stereophile: Wadia Announces Launch of iPod Dock with S/PDIF Output

Story appears confirmed and makes sense in light of other stories about the "Apple authentication chip" unlocking various new capabilities on the current generation iPods.

So, we now have the possibility of 160gb iPod Classic + portable amp with SPDIF DAC. It's only a matter of time. Let's hope Ray Samuels, HeadAmp, and Headphone are all calling Apple for that "authentication chip." Could open the door to a significant improvement in the quality of airplane listening...

No, the DAC is what receives the digital signal and then converts it to an analog signal...the digital signal comes from the processor in the iPod.

The DAC does not create the digital signal, it converts it.
