It seems I am going to purchase one of them for my portable MP3 player. It is hard for me to make the decision between them. W1000 looks realy great meanwhile k701 has good sound

I've got both the 701s and the W5000s. I prefer the 701s, but I've got a really good amp. I think that neither is very good with an unamped mp3 player. Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pros are much better un-amped with my iPhone in iPod mode.

Do you need isolation? The AKGs are open, you know. The wood on the ATs is just that, wood, so don't get hung up on that. It has no significant benefit over other possible materials, IMHO. Isolation is pretty good with the AT, but not anywhere close to the UE IEMs.

I have not tried these headphones without an amp.

I have listened to the K701s extensively and, to me, they are too bright and the headphones themselves are uncomfortable on my head. I know that many people like this sound but they really made my head and ears hurt.

I purchased the W1000s and have found them to be very comfortable and they offer a good alternative to my HD650s.

I totally don't recommend full sized cans with portable MP3 players... none I tried could even drive a K518DJ decently. You will definitely need an external amp for full sized cans with MP3 Players, the players alone can't deliver enough power for the cans.

From personal experience the ATs will work better from an I-pod than the AKG's but both really benefit from a sympathetic amp match.

Right now I'm actually trying to decide to pick up either a pair of K701s or W5000s. Care to explain what the differences are, and what you like about the 701s better?

I guess the reason why W1000 works on portable gears is its low impedance, and K701 is hard to drive. I prefer listenning to speakers at home that give me more buzzs and no wearing problem
