hi there, i'm visiting my relatives in honolulu this weekend for 3 weeks. i'm looking to get a prepaid phone to keep in contact whilst here. just wondering what is the best/cheapest service avaliable? i will be most likely bringing a phone over or use one my relatives have as spare..

coming from australia there seems to be a few more strings attached.

i checked out sprint, nextel, and at&t. out of the three i find at&t the cheapest, definately cheaper than sprint. not sure on nextel though as i couldn't find their prepaid plans on the website

i'm looking at the at&t Pay As You Go $.25 per minute plan, can i use this with a BYO phone?

thanks,
peter

I am not sure about service in Hawaii, but check out both T-Mobile and AT&T. See if they have free calls in their network and find out what service your relatives have.
If your phone is unlocked, you shouldn't have any problems using it here if it is Quad Band.

Another option might be to get a phone card.....you can use your relatives land line (assuming they have one), and not burden them with a bill by using a pre-paid card. Or if your relatives have a sweet international plan, then you could reimburse them. Just my personal preference, but I don't like pre-paid cell phones....a waste of a phone IMO.

Verizon works well. I am going off Verizon Pre-paid untill I get put on my Family's plan in a few months. Works well.

thats exactly how pre-paid works here as well
