Well, today after school I journeyed over to HeadRoom and talked to Todd and Tyll. I met the crew and was showed around their building.
We talked for a little bit about different headphones, amps, sources.
I listened to the following:
Sennheiser PX200 through Panasonic unamped
Sennheiser PX200 through Cosmic + panasonic
[Top secret Sennheiser model - you'll have to wait and see!
] through cosmic
Grado SR-60 through cosmic + panasonic
Sennheiser HD600 through cosmic + panasonic
I think the cosmic is excellent but I honestly noticed source flaws: The SL-CT470 is a great source but the high end was slightly disconnected and glossy with the Cosmic; although detail, imaging, resolution was vastly improved over the PDCP outlet. I really enjoyed these 'cans through the Cosmic and their sound unamped was surprisingly good. Great phones.
I then was shown by Tyll the Blockhead + HD600 cardas + meridian. I got to listen to some Steely Dan and an unknown contemporary jazz artist for a few minutes.
First impressions: Incredible. Detail was incredible. Soundstage was PERFECT. I'm talking iNCREDIBLE! I play violin in two orchestras and frequently play in Reynold's recital hall locally. It is considered to be sonically one of the best locations in the northwest for solo violin recital. The soundstage is just like it. Perfecty rich, vast, deep. . . I forgot I was listening to headphones. Honestly.
The high end was so good that it just blended perfectly into the midrange. Perfect transient decay. Wow. Dead black - there's something incredble about balanced sourcing.
Although I'm not a basshead (anymore, haha) this amp really took me by surprise. DT770 owners would cry if they heard HD600s through a Blockhead + meridian. Quite incredible. Sennheisers are infamous for midbass punch and slight bloat but the low end was perfectly and accurately rendered. It actually shook my head in perfect sync with the music. Upon taking the headphones off and just holding them, I was startled: At moderate volumes they actually shook like a high quality subwoofer. Unlike most subs though this bass was absolutely accurate.
Midbass was detailed and textured. Very emotional, realistic-sounding. I really can't explain it; it was perfect. Upper bass bloat was nonexistant.
Keep in mind that this is in reference to what live music I have heard and performed. If you want to know what a blockhead sounds like, just enjoy a live jazz performance in a sonically superior venue with a quiet audience. It's THAT good.
Ok, now on to other things, I'll stop ranting about this combo as it will be a looong time before I can afford something as incredible as it.
I talked to Todd and Tyll for a while and then loaned a pair of CD3000s. I'm going to see just how good these things are. Expect an A-B comparision to the HD-600s coming soon. These guys have literally tons of headphones.
All-in-all it was a great visit. Very nice people who make great products. I'm really glad to live in their hometown.
Cheers,
