Very Cheap Budget CDP

Try the Sony SCD-CE595. I don't know the going price, but I got one for $80 or so as a refurb. I upgraded to a Marantz SA8001, but we still have the Sony down at our place in the desert.

It plays SACD (if you ever wanted to give that a try) and has a 5 disc carousel with surround outputs. The Marantz sounds better, but you can't beat the CE595 on price. It sounds good. Run some thread searches for it - they were very popular here for a time.

So the Sony should sound better than the Toshiba DVD player I'm on now right?

Also, from what I've been reading, some people are having the audio drop out for 5-10 seconds, which is worrying me.

Save a little more and aim for the Marantz CD5001 or the Oppo DV-980h, if you can find it ~$170. Unbeatable value.

The marantz is warmer but less detailed than the oppo IMO. They're both great players, you just can't go wrong with these two.

I was kinda looking for just a CD player, and a little cheaper. The oppo looks great though. If I had a TV to plug that into also, then I would get that, but I don't.

And would someone know where I could find a Cambridge D300? That looks like my best bet.

Smooth, especially in the highs, warm, rich, full, bassy, lively and colorful midrange, extreme treble and bass are rolled off, wide soundstage, imaging is not very precise but rather diffuse, macrodynamics could be a little better, bass could be tighter, there is a certain easiness about its sound that makes it musical and pleasant to listen to. Especially suitable to acoustic music:jazz, classical music (chamber, orchestral...). It is a good match to rather bright and lean headphones like my Stax and AKGs. The transport is only OK, plays CD-Rs but is sensitive to scratches; the features are quite limited (cannot display the time left from the track that is playing, for example). I think it was a very good value for the retail price of ~$300; not that is discontinued and pops up (rarely) for roughly $100 it is a no brainer.

I second this Sony. Its a great player if you can find one. They have mod for this unit too.
