Hey all! as you can probably deduce, I am a new member, and this is my first post.

You can probably figure from the title that I own a set of MDR-V600's, and I thought they sounded good. I paid $100US for them when I was over there (I live in Australia) and I was really very surprised, that was equivalent to around $120 AU, and in Australia they sell for around $250AU, I obviously thought I got a bargain. 'Not so' says everyone here, I have learnt that they are actually a terrible set, mainly from this site, but I was wondering what people would reccomend for me.

I am on a very tight budget (I am 15, I work in a Fish and Chips shop for $8\hr) But I am looking for some nice sounding cans.

I love techno, so that might be how I thought the V-600's sounded okay, but I do enjoy rock, 70's, 80's, some rap, almost anything except really Country music and most classical. Due to my love of techno\electronica genres, I need a set with good bass response, but I don't want it to be 'muddy' (another reason why so many dislike v-600's?) though I still need crisp and clear treble.

I hear a LOT of praise for Grado, but I think they may be a little out of my price range, and they may be a little difficult to acquire in Australia.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Depending on what you're after, you can get a pair of MS1's sent to you for under 100$ US.

The most important part of whatever you're hearing is if you're happy with it, then it's right. Probably best you stick with the v600's if you enjoy them and run the hell out of here.

That said, welcome to head-fi... sorry about your wallet.

Circum aural does it for me, I couldn't really give a stuff about portability, and i'm not too sure about the pros\cons between open\sealed, never listened to open (xD)

I enjoy the V600's, but it seems there is much better out there, without spending a massive amount of money, until I saw this site.

I thought I had hit a 'plateau' because I couldn't really afford anything much more expensive from Aus, but if there is (there is) better headphones out there, I just need a little education on the subject :p

Thanks for the replies,

Lunchbox

EDIT: A700's look really nice, specs look good too, but it's not all about the numbers

Also, my budget would probably be around $200USD if I am to purchase them anytime soon, anything more and I'd
Be saving for ages, or maybe even have to wait for christmas ( the joys of bein' young

Oh, well in that case, you should be looking at the A900. If you could, however, stretch your budget a bit, the AD900 will give you better overall sound quality. It's open though, so if you NEED isolation, get the A900.

You learned that they were terrible? Did they suddenly stop sounding good when you learned of this fact? Or do they sound the same as they always did? If you are satisfied, don't buy another pair of headphones, and don't come here any more; you will save yourself a lot of money and headaches.

If in fact you may actually be a Sony fan, then the MDR-V6 could be the one. Or I could certainly go along with the previously mentioned MS-1.

The MDR-V6 may last you the rest of your life,(tough cans!)or the habit forming MS-1 may give you a life-long addiction.

...both could be very good choices at this point!

I was simply stating that most, if not all people on this forum, and im sure many other audiophile forums say that v600's are not a good set of cans, I learned that they were terrible, I thought they were good because they were better than anything I have listened to before, which is not a lot.

I never said I was satisfied, I don;t understand the "Dont come here any more" comment, I am looking for advice on good headphones, so I am not satisfied with the Sony's considering I havent heard much if any positive comments about them from audiophiles, so therefore I would simply searching for info on what would be a good set of headphones to buy, on a website\forum that seems to be the best place to ask.

I was a Sony fan until I realised I can't get any warranty for these phones in Australia because I bought them in the US. Sony was NOT as all helpful, when I tried to contact them in the states, half the time I would get the computer asking me for my home phone no including area code, without it I couldnt proceed.

Over sony as of now anyway, their cans seem to be overpriced and sub standard

PS Just considered that I may be able to sell the v600's for around $200 here, (Have all original packaging etc.) so that may give me some more cash to play with. ($200AU roughly $170US)

Ok; let's start over!

The traditional Head-Fi welcome goes something like this: "Welcome to Head-fi, and Sorry about Your Wallet."!

Rather frequently a person comes here looking for a nice set of phones for home or portable use and ends up getting hooked on the hobby and a simple $75 purchase tuns into a multi-$K elaborate system! It can get out of hand pretty quickly!
biggrin.gif

So Welcome! And just be aware of "can" happen to you finances! Heh heh heh.
very_evil_smiley.gif

....anyway; that's what was meant by the comments.

I've never heard the V6, or the V600, but hundreds of posts have been written on the matter by folks who have, and people are warned away from the V600 and toward the V6 as much better sonically and physically. The V6 has been a staple in recording studios for decades and is well known for their toughness.

...I want to get a set to keep at home to keep my kids from using my MS-1 so much! I like them too! But in my case the MS-1 led me to the MS2i, hence the "sorry about your wallet" syndrome which I have caught as well.

Ditto on the V6. Same basis of sound as the V600, just much more refined without the fat, muddy bass bloat - better/sharper highs, too. The V6 is pretty much a majority choice among recording professionals - or close to it.

B&H Photo may have the most consistently low price. You also need to get velour cushions as a replacement - the ones made for the Beyer DT250 fit perfectly. B&H offered them as a standard accessory at one time for the V6 - not sure if they still do that.

The Sony pleather on the V600/V6/etc. is very thin. It deteriorates badly within 1, 2, or 3 years depending on usage. Sometimes it's just a split, most of the time the stuff starts flaking off like some sort of monster-movie-black-dandruff-disease - really bad. Sony's pleather and Koss's pneumalite are the bane of headphone cushioning. Nobody knows why they keep using the stuff.

I recommend it as well, best for all-around usage.

They actually potentially have great bass, but are one of those headphones that can really sound very different depending on amplification. In other words, they'd be a great purchase, but will "require" the additional purchase of an amp to bring them up to what they can do.

The V6, though inferior generally speaking, is a good choice in that they will also perform pretty well, and do so even out of an mp3 player if need be. Maybe more practical if you don't want to to sink a wad. If you do want to sink some cash, though, hit the search function! try Saint.Panda's huge closed headphone review for starters. And middlers and enders, for that matter.

Also, to confirm, "run the other way and never come back" is considered friendly advice here. It's a terrible thing, if you just get one good pair and leave, you'll be quite happy; if you hear better headphones and sources, you will never be that happy again, because you'll only hear the problems with them. Typical audiophile conundrum.

edit, ps, I originally opened this thread because from the title I though some mad DIYer had found a mod to make a famously mediocre headphone shine. What a thread that would be!
