They're not defective.  They're just not the greatest at isolating, or well, the reverse of that.
Thanks for your guys reply. wish I could know that earlier. Thought I did enough research but looks like not good enough. Thought all closed back cans do good job at isolation.

has anyone tried b&w p7 or sony mdr-1r?Do they do a great job at isolation? If I can't make do with m100's isolation (I often listen at library)I might consider switching.

+1 mdr-1r! super comfy. not sure about the isolation tho. sorry. been around for a while, so you can get a really good deal on em. prob easily find em sub-$200

-1 p7. i demoed em at best buy & i was underwhelmed at their sound for the price. YMMV tho! :)

edit: you should add the akg k545 onto that list too lol. $200 on sale razerdogaudio

A couple questions...

does the DX50 have enough power to properly drive these with the onboard amp? I already have the DX50 and am considering the m100s.

Also, how well do they isolate? I'm not too worried about sound leakage, but I work in a somewhat noisy environment and need phones that can deaden a little of the background  noise. How well do they stack up against others? Do the xl pads help deaden?

Thanks

An unfair comparison, just as I had imagined :p

So how's the quantity of bass? I'm guessing it isn't at Pro900 levels...still, if it's even remotely similar I might need to start preparing my wallet...

Bass is very good but no, not Pro900 levels. Not much is in that league. The TH900 bass is huge when amped properly.

Areal thorn - $300 is not needed. I bought the NuForce uDac2 and my Kenwood for a shade over $100. Not that a TH900 is a portable but my Arrow3G drives it well.

how much different is a 1000 dollar can actually compared to a 300 dollar portable? just curious.
Does it sound more open? more like expensive 2.1 speaker towers? :D

It depends on the headphone. You can pay $1500 for a closed-back Fostex TH900 and I would argue that it doesn't sound that much better than a $300. Or you can go for a STAX earspeaker or HD800 and it sounds completely different.

The AKG K1000 (bass heavy version) with the "wings" open is probably one of the most speaker-like "headphones" I've heard and it can't compare to $300 headphones.

Yes. but those are just like attaching speakers to your head XD.

I really want to try out the hd800 one day though, really curious how spacy they are, and if they really are bass light

so I did some research on akg k545 and found it is absolutely a very good pair of cans. However, I see reviews say that its isolation is not very impressive. I would be very appreciated if anyone can tell me its isolation level compares to m100.

Also I noticed some mentioned that the thicker the pads the better the isolation, so does anyone here who has their XL pads installed experience better isolation?

Hi guys. Recently I tried a cable substitution for m100 from fiio and it wasn't bad. What I noticed straight away was the vocal became open n clear (which is very great). Tested it head to head with the stock and I realized that vocal on the original one is a bit blanketed.
Just wondering if there is any other substitute? 'd love to get more info :)

A number of people have/use a nuforce transient cable with their M-100s. I use one occasionally and it is nice for when you are wearing clothes that the stock cable rubs harshly against. I didn't hear any sonic differences vs stock, however.

hi guys, I just got my m100 delivered to me yesterday and I tried them on right away. The sound did not disappoint me at all! However, my friend next to me said the sound leaked a little and as I was listening a high pitched vocal, he said he could hear every word she was singing. My volume was only set to about 50%. Is it because m100 doesn't isolate sound very well or mine is defected?

I think this may be a result of the thin stock earpads and the XL pads isolate better as I own both.

Whether they make a difference in sound quality or not, I'll be the judge. Where can I get wooden shields?!

An interesting first post.  I would love the option of wood shields.
