So.. i just bought AD700's and a xonar STX... however, im a audio newb.

Im looking for best surround sound for FPS gaming, like BF3 and what not.

Also, please explain ASIO bit-depth and latency settings if possible..

What would you recommend, setting wise, for gaming in FPS games.. such as BF3?

windows 7 x64 bit, i5 3750k 16gb ram

The obvious setting to enable for gaming is Dolby Headphone.

As for which DH mode, the console gamers generally use DH2 because it's the only mode supported on the Astro Mixamp and Turtle Beach Ear Force DSS, but DH1 can be pretty good too. I'd avoid DH3, though; way too much reverb.

I can't really help you beyond that due to lack of familiarity with Xonar drivers.

The Unified Xonar Driver seems to get a lot of positive feedback

i have the stx and i am using the unified drivers

when installing them, check the c-media panel and leave the rest like it is.
once installed, the c-media panel will be launched (in background, taskbar) when booting and if u want to use your (old) xonar audio center, you need to manually start it (start - programs - ....)
settings:
always change your settings with the c-media panel and if you really prefer the old xonar audio center, remember never to enable GX
now, settings in the c-media panel:
8channel
ex xear 3d
dolby headphone
dolby 7.1 virtual speaker shifter

these settings should give you a pretty good 3d feeling and positioning

EDIT:
when using the st/stx, use uni xonar version 1.53
i only use xonar audio center to enable hifi mode which will disable all virtualizations (dolby, eax,...). disabling them is a good thing for listening music.
and about asio: right click the c-media icon (taskbar), click ASIO panel and use 24-bit and 10ms (best settings for the st/stx)

from the uni xonar blog (http://brainbit.wordpress.com/category/uni-xonar/):

Quote:
Note for ST/STX owners: Because of the known issues from 1.60 update log, I would recommend installing or staying on  1.53 drivers .

these issues include:

Asus Audio Center was updated from 1.60. Still don’t think it will play well with ST/STX cards.

and

Know issues  :  1) FP Headphones switching isn’t working for Xonar ST/STX cards   ;  2)  Switching from Headphones to Speakers doesnt work on  Xonar ST/STX cards;

and maybe even more issues...

maybe you should check the blog out yourself

For the Unified drivers, do you need to uninstall the stock asus drivers first? Or can I just install the Unified drivers?

few months since ive been here at head-fi....

for the unified drivers, yo will need to uninstall asus driver first and then reboot and install the unifieds. i recommend you choose the "low dpc" driver for current version
