It's very different from my Sony S7700.. Best way to describe the two.. The HD DVD player is Grado..Upfront, more dynamic, greater clarity, fatiguing to a degree, & in your face.. The Sony. Is warmer, more laid back..More analog sounding..Smoother..Not as harsh..With a better black ground..

I will have to A/B the two to make sure.. I'm using the DAC1 on both my players..

I often use my Toshiba HD-DVD A1 as my souce. When I use it I let it do the digital anolog conversion. I think it is a great source with a great internal DAC.

My next buy is going to be a DAC1 (usb version) from Benchmark to use with my Computer.

I was wondering how does the interal DAC of you Toshiba compair to you DAC1? Also how is the internal headphone amp on the DAC1?

I haven't compared the two as of yet.. The amp on the DAC1 is pretty good..Sharp, detailed, & low distortion..
