Using Apple cable on Android phone

I just received my new pair of V-Moda M80s which I bought second hand. The problem is that they didn't come with the Android cable, only the Apple one. I tried using this on my Xperia and it sounded awful. I'm hoping that this is just because I'm using the wrong cable so I just wanted to know if using the wrong cable can effect the sound quality of the phones.

Turns out, yes. This does effect the sound. I was able to get my hands on an iPod and they sound unbelievable.
