I'm trying to stop a slight hum (electrical) that is induced by a torroid transformer and came up with the idea of using shotgun lead pellet sewn in a bag to wrap around the transformer. Is lead an effective shield against such radiation, or am I wasting my time/money?

I would imagine so, considering lead is quite effective blocking most other forms of radiation. But don't listen to me. I slept through the majority of my physics courses.

Why not try it out? If you can't hear a difference, why bother with it at all?

You're not dealing with "radiation". It's a magnetic field, and as such you need magnetically-responsive materials to cope with it. Iron, steel, nickel, mu-metal...

I was going to say something but realized you did say exactly what I was thinking. Yeah so what good ole Tangent said.

You need something magnetic. Overheating should not be a problem unless the transformer is already running close to it's limits - it which case you have an undersized transformer as a result of bad design. The transformer should not be very warm at all.
