I purchased a pair of:

My idea was to convert a one pair of inputs on the back of my amp to two. Well it is not working, if I connect one source at a time sound comes thru the headphones. However if I connect both sources (even with one off) no sound comes thu.

Are these splitters unidirectional? I mean, they will work to convert an ouput into two outputs but not in reverse?

Thanks for your help.

I think you're right, I have a set of these I bought from Jan Meier, and encountered similar problems. I figured out that I could only use them on my source to turn one output into two. It was nice for testing IC's though, since my amp has 3 inputs.

I'm going to try this with my splitters and see if I get the same result. I'll post back shortly

Edit: Ok here are my findings. I got it to work, however, with both sources connected at the same time and only one playing, the signal is seriously attenuated. If I unplug the source end of the cable, and leave both sets of RCA's plugged into the splitter, then it works fine.

I was able to switch back and forth with both plugged in, but the volume is just too low to listen.

mrarroyo, maybe you could get a switch box?

There are two, one in red and another in black, you have to order them separate, as they are different catalog numbers...but they are really sturdy and heavy duty....same as the RCA jacks....

If I'm not mistaken the output resistance of the source is smaller than the input resistance of the amp. Therefore you are sending the signal not to the amp but from one source to another. It's why you can't (and shouldn't try) to combine two signals with a splitter since it may cause damage.
