i may need to buy one of these. my laptop only has USB out, and the DAC i want only has optical and coaxial.

WOuld this converter affect anthing?

Would a more more expensive converter be better, or, like USB cables, does it not make any difference?

WOuld this increase likelyhood of jitter/ decreased sound quality compared to straight optical out (no usb converted to optical)?

thanks guys, i may get a Beresford TC-7510 MKIII you see!

Try the HagUSB, spdif to coaxial.
I had the transit and the hagusb was noticeably better.

What exactly was "noticeably better", did you A/B/X two?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the converter _could_ affect the sound. The "straight optical out" could either sound better or worse than USB > optical, depending on which USB converter you're using, and what you're using for your "straight optical out".

I think the audigy 2 NX with its async USB (low jitter between the converter and the PC, at least) is a fairly 'logical' choice as well.
