^ That be a USB extender...I doubt it can tap more than just data from the Shuffle.

The OP is asking about if a cable can achieve a line-out effect like a full-sized iPod can.

It does not have a true line-out, only an amplified (mini phone jack) output.

exactly! possibility? I dunno..

there is a couple of post from 2006 that talk about the USB connection having extra pins and these being line out connections.

The USB definitely has the audio connectors, but unfortunately it is not a fixed line out but works (and sounds) just like the headphone out.

These 2 sound the same and the volume can be controlled via the Shuffle volume:

The one thing I find the adapter in the pic good for is to dock the Shuffle into existing iPod dock compatible speakers and inside my car system. For day to day usage, I'll normally not use an amp.

However, if there was a way to get a fixed line out from the USB, I would be first in line to buy the connector.

cool, alright someones got something going on.

that's the connector made by griffin, I think, so you can use the shuffle with an ipod dock. i think one of the post i came across somewhere other than head-fi was speaking of it.

so it really makes no difference than the headphone out?

i thought maybe the shuffle and a small portable amp would make a good little pocket system much like you got going on.

thanks for the post and pictures!

This adapter is made by Kensington (http://us.kensington.com/html/10118.html). I originally had the Belkin one (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=245852) but this one had a much better form factor, so Belkin got itself returned. Kind of sucky thing is that you can't get the iPod Shuffle to charge with the Kensington on a standard iPod dock (ie; 4G Dock).

There is absolutely no difference between headphone out and through the adapter. The Shuffle's volume control still works so you are essentially amping the sound x2. Although, amping it doesn't sound bad at all, but the 1G Shuffle sounds so good already that I usually just leave the amp behind. When I do amp it, I normally just use the headphone out.

Not sure if all the Shuffle adapters work the same way, but if there is one that would provide a true line out, I'd love to know which one. All I know is that the Kensington is not it

You are so right though, a 1G Shuffle would work awesome with almost any amp out there since the size of it is so small. I wish someone knew if dedicated line out is doable or not...
