Hello All:

I just observed something that I am sure almost all of you using one of these external hard drives have seen but me.

But just case you have not let me point out that little something that I just observed.

I right clicked my start button to open windows file explorer.

I then right clicked on my external hard drive letter to access its properties.

From here I clicked on the Hardware tab.

On the list of hard drives I selected my external usb drive.

I then clicked on the properties buttom below.

Here I saw four more tabs where one was policies which I selected.

Here I observed that I had two choices. One is for it to be optimized for quick removal. Note I do not unplug this drive. I have it in an almost inaccessible location. The second option was for performance.

The default option is for quick removal.

I selected a new option the one for performance.

The computer will want to restart following making this change.

I am thinking that this may be an issue for others attempting to have a more stable performance out of their USB audio devices or when playing files off their USB drives.

If you want to do this do it at your own risk...

As long as one never just unplugs stuff (= always uses the safe removal function instead), there'll be no problem with the performance setting.

Greetings from Hannover!

Do you have to use the safe removal option if you are just turning the power off of your external hard drive?

I think it would be prudent if you did this and you had it set for performance. What you would be doing is potential leaving some hanging open files and lead to having cross linked files which is not a good thing.

Since setting my external USB drive up for performance I have had much better response from it.

Here is a link that concerns the optimization of the Windows system for audio:
