URBANFUN YBF-ISS014 Impressions thread

I owned a pair of the first batch ISS014, I just love it and recommend it to my net pals. Recently, my net pal told me that the sole seller in TaoBao ( China ), revealing the factory no longer using Beryllium to make the new batch of ISS014. They will use different metallic-coating diaphragm instead.

I am quite surprised for such changes, and how honesty they are :joy: I still haven't get a chance to try the new batch, but this seller mentioned to my net pal the new batch will be less spicy in high. This TaoBao seller already remove the "Beryllium Diaphragm" description in Chinese. I am not sure if the factory will keep the original Beryllium version for the export market ( e.g. AliExpress ). I suggested you should ask the seller before placing the order.

I love the original ISS014 so much, I really don't want to see the later buyers receiving a unpredictable version of ISS014 with different tuning

Wow, that is unfortunate.

My guess is that they are using a cheaper driver to offset the extra cost of fixing the mmcx sockets. It will probably be titanium coated from your description.

Well, this made me order another unit straight away instead of waiting for the next Ali sale. Hopefully it'll still be from the initial batch and without MMCX issues this time.

They only just said 2-3 days ago that they would fix the mmcx problem in the next batch. I don't think 3 days is enough time to fix the problem and ship new earphones to sellers.

I don't see why these should be linked, a better MMCX connector shouldn't cost so much more that they'd have to downgrade the driver to maintain a similar price.

Anyway, I'll see what I'll get and if it's from a new batch, I'll be able to say what's different..

I guess they produced a small quantity trial order at first, and should be completely sold out.
About a week ago, I noticed they began the pre-order for the new batch ISS014 in Ali and TaoBao. My net pal pre-order one in TaoBao, and the seller inform him that his order is ready to ship yesterday.
Therefore, I am not sure they still have the old stock. Or do they even bother to update the product description in their Ali shop !?

Yeesh, what a cluster, this is how brands totally lose faith of customers. It's a shame because the set I have sounds amazing. But without beryllium at this price it's just another face in the crowd...

Given their previous products I associate urbanfun with beryllium.

That's not a metallic coating. The only metallic coatings are aluminum, titanium, and beryllium

Aluminum, that sounds interesting, any particular example? There is magnesium also, as in Periodic Audio Mg (which I wouldn't recommend buying).

You're right; I forgot about magnesium. It is used very rarely in headphone drivers, but I don't know what the reason is (cost, performance vs other metals, etc).

Here's a chart showing how different diaphragm materials perform relative to one another (magnesium and some others are not represented):

As far as an example of a driver that uses aluminum, the Sony MDR-Z1R uses a liquid crystal polymer (ie kevlar) outer diaphragm, that's been aluminum coated (via VPD). And it has a center dome made of magnesium foil.
