Hi,

So my wife got a hold of my AKG K550 and now I can't seem to pry them from her.  I'm looking to upgrade, but am unsure where to go from here.

I listen to most everything, with a preference to alternative/acoustic/rock music.  I also have AKG K501s (which I mostly listen to for classical) but want a closed back set for work.

Don't currently have an amp, but am willing to buy one with my headphones.

I'm currently looking at the following T50RP mods: ZMF (v1 or v2) or Alpha Dogs (and from what I read, I would love to hear AKG K812s (don't want to spend 1500 on headphones quite yet, though)).

Anyone have both and willing to give a comparison for me?

Thanks in advance!

ZMF v1 is practically tuned for acoustic, all string music really, and it can handle the other genres. I haven't heard Alpha Dogs, but Mad Dog didn't especially impress me.

I prefer the sound of quality of my ATH-A900Xs over my K550s.
My ATH-W1000Xs arrived yesterday, like them better then my A900Xs
The 42-Ohm ATH-W1000Xs can work without a headphone amplifier.
A FiiO E10 USB-DAC-Amp ($75) should do a little better at driving the W1000X's, then plugging straight into a motherboard.

Audio Technica ATH-W1000X, $420.

Too dark sounding like Audeze, so not useful to me with many genres.

Thanks for your input!  From what I've read, the Alpha dogs are slightly more neutral than the MD's; I hope I hear from someone who's heard both

Would you consider the ATH-W1000X to have a V shaped frequency response curve?  I've had the ATH-M50's before but I found it was a little fatiguing after an hour or two.
It is a gorgeous looking headphone, though I'm worried the wood cups would be scratched/dinged too easily.
