I am pretty disappointed with the SQ from my 30gb ipod. Got rid of my H320 to get this ipod mainly due to the fact that it integrates with my car audio. Next upgrade is now being considered. Budget is $400 / 200 gbp. So do I .....
1. Replace the ipod with ??? (sony / kenwood etc ) ?
2. Amp the ipod ?

(i can't really hear much diff in the SQ of my two headphones so i assume its the source thats the issue !)

definitely amp the Ipod. Don't have to go overboard to hear a drastic difference. Go to the FS forums and pick a reasonably priced amp (tomahawk, used XIn, etc) and start there. If you don't notice a difference, you can always resell it for little or no loss of money

I have replaygained my collection - why ?

Would it not be reasonable to suggest i would get the most bang for my buck by getting, say, the Sony 818 rather than an lie out cable AND an amp ?

I assume you're using the headphone out. Replaygaining my collection allowed me to play at a higher volume without distortion.

Gotta agree with the other posters. Using the line-out with an amp will definitely clean up the signal some.
