i have a quick question and i'm looking for some suggestions. i have some modified koss porta pros (kramer, quarter, recable, resistors, earpads,) and i'm thinking about upgrading to some grados. i really like the RS2s, but i'm short on cash because of school. i do like the porta pros, they actually surprised the heck out of me for 30 bucks. i was thinking of upgrading to the sr80 to bridge the gap between the porta pros and the RS2, but i've read that the difference between the porta pro and lower-end grados isn't that big. obviously they'd be much better than the koss phones, but should i just save the hundred, or so, dollars to put toward the RS2s? the porta pros are adequate for me now, but a bit veiled and muddy. Thanks!

Save a few bucks over the RS2 and order HF2s. Eighch Eff Tooooooooos.

You'll have over a month to save before they ship and you get charged.

i thought about it. but not sure when i'll have enough saved. i could always charge it, but ... sigh. you guys really were right about the wallet thing, eh?

i guess i'll have to research a bit more. i guess that the exclusive status is reason enough. presumably i can always get some RS2s.

I was mostly kidding; didn't mean to cause any pressure. By most of the accounts I've read, the HF2 should compare favorably to the RS2 (and perhaps the RS1) and it's a bit cheaper (and would retain its value much better should you decide they're not for you).

Granted, I haven't heard mine yet, so my opinion is fairly worthless.

Alternately, you could continue to be happy with what you have and save up for the RS2s (or RS1s) over a longer period of time.

If you like the RS2s now, you'll probably end up upgrading if you go for a lower-end Grado, so keep that in mind if you're budget-restricted.

i've heard both the RS1 and RS2, and i can't really tell the difference between the two. my ear/gear isn't that good... yet. but i've yet to actually hear any other grados, SR80 included. so i'd likely be setting myself up for disappointment if i "settle" for those. but then, not really since the porta pros are at least listenable. i have some great speakers in my room that sound at least as good as the RS2s.
