I recently modded my M1060s with a pad swap (ZMF Suede Eikons) and fuzzor mod. I am definitely happy with them, but I think I liked them before the mods. I have a vali 2 and modi multibut, but am thinking about getting a magni 3. From what I have heard, the modded m1060s should sound 90-95% as good as the LCD 2's, which would of been the upgrade route. However, I was on amazon and saw the LCD X's (-case) going for $1200 which seemed not bad compared to there usual price. I also want to try some other headphones like the HD600s, and the DT1990s. I also have the HD650s, 400Is and X2s. I like the M1060s the most, then HD650s, then X2s, and am probably going to sell 400is. Honestly, I am not sure where to go from here. Sorry if this was a little incoherent, but I just wanted to put it all out there (what headphones I like and so on) Thanks and any recommendations are appreciated.

I have not tried the dt1990s, but the hd650s did not come close to my my lcd2c in performance. I cant imagine the 600 would either as it was a step down from the 650 for me. Even the t1 and the t5 to me just did not quite have what the planars have. What you could do is look at thecableco.com lending library and try out some headphones and maybe some amps. Everything that you spend on the deposits is put towards anything you purchase and there is no expiration on how long they keep the credit. https://www.thecableco.com/lending-library

It's going to LARGELY depend on what you use them for, but let me make some observations and see if they ring true.

From the headphones you like, it appears you prefer a warm sound signature. The 400i's were the closes thing to neutral in your lineup, and you ditched them. The rest lean to warm or bass heavy. If that's the the case, let's proceed.

I have both the HD6xx and LCD2C. While listening to electronic or jazz or really intimate music, I prefer the LCD2C. For pop music, I prefer the hd6xx. For rock and punk and ska, I like my HD400i's. While I'm gaming, I use the HD6xx. They may not have the largest stage, but their imaging is tops.

I haven't heard the 1060s, so I can't attest, I haven't heard another headphone with the LCD2's liquid, ooey gooey, fresh out of the oven warmth. It's such a unique experience it's hard to describe. I had imagined the 1060's closer to neutral like the 400i, but I could be off. If you want a step up from there, I found the MrSpeaker's were a good option, but I went with Ether Open (No Flow), but heard really good things about the Aeon. Maybe entry level Stax wouldn't be awful either. I'm about to try the Elear, and from many accounts, that might be in your wheelhouse too.

Like I said, usage makes the difference here.

Hmm, I think I might have to lend some headphones. I don't really have any good audio shops to audition headphones near me. Honestly, I wish I got the LCD 2Cs when they were on sale, and just skipped over the m1060s.

Err, I really should of gotten the LCD 2Cs. MrSpeakers does seem appealing, and stax even more so. I definitely want a pair of Stax to call my own one day, but that may be a bit away.

Would the LCD Xs be an upgrade fro the LCD2s, or the HD800s?

I think you should listen to the lcd-3 and the lcd-x from the loaner program and decide for yourself then purchase whichever you like better. I have not heard either the x or the 3 but going off what Tyll said he prefers the 2c to the x and the 3 to the 2c. You can still find the 2c for 600 in the marketplace, just have to keep an eye out and the warranty transfers.

Also, you can get used Stax with amp for under 800$ easy.
