Hi

After listening to my uncle's Shure E4cs, I'm a convert to something a little more
eggosmile.gif
and would like to upgrade my Sonys.

Source: 3rd gen iPod (music mostly 192 and V0 VBR)
Budget: Around £70-80 max
Genre of music: mostly rock/electronic/trip-hop.
Requirements: I like a lot of bass, but tight and not boomy. Also would like something as noise isolating as possible. I will be using them walking for about an hour a day, so microphonics are something of a concern.

I've considered:
• Ety ER6i (but worried about 'lack' of bass and cable microphonics)
• V-Moda Vibes (but don't like the idea of the air coming through - would like something more noise isolating)

Also Shure E2/3c, but not looked into them too much. UM2s and 4cs too expensive.

So what I would appreciate is your advice - what would you recommend? Is there anything else I should consider?

Thanks!

Just to make sure, you will be going amp-less correct?

Have you looked into the Westone UM1. They seem to fit the criteria that you have listed. They also have zero microphonics and are extremely comfortable. If you don't like boomy bass, then the E2C probably isn't for you, especially after listening to the E4C, and the E3C is just overpriced for the performance it gives.

Just a note, pretty much any entry level IEM will be a pretty good upgrade from the EX71. I went through two pairs of those in my "pre Head-fi" days.

I am upgrading from Sony Ex51 (in-ear type), E888 to AKG K24P (headphone). The bass is very fine comparing the previous. It is not too much(this is reason I rejected K26P) but clear with flexity. It is not very expensive, perhaps USD 40.00 or so for normal sales price. I purchased from a friend who gave me a price os RMB 200.00 (equals to USD 26.00). I think it was a good deal.

I see you have the Vibes in your signature, didn't you like these even over your EX51/71s?

I just bought some E4Gs from a US Ebay seller for £104 (could have been under £100 if I'd chosen a cheaper delivery option). A bit over your budget but something to consider.

Noise isolation is great. I've been doing a lot of train and underground travel recently and they block out the majority of the noise meaning I still keep the volume levels low.

The improvement over my EX70 and my wife's EX71s are very significant.
