Hey guys,

I'm thinking of getting a Merlin, and would like to get carbon fiber inserts under a colored translucent faceplate, but I can't find any pictures of anyone doing something like that, anywhere, on any CIEM (everyone seems to get clear).
Does anyone have any pictures of carbon fiber inserts under a colored faceplate?
It doesn't even have to be limited to UM if it helps give an idea of what such a design would look like.
Just for information, the color faceplates I am thinking of are dark violet>smoke>wine red (this might look the best, but worried about it looking too bright, want to look demure...)
The shell and tips would be opaque black.

Any information or pictures welcome.

Have a look on http://www.custom-inearmonitors.co.uk/gallery.html. loads on there. I bought my Merlin's from them and they have the titanium inserts under translucent colour. I think they look good. Happy shopping!

Thanks for the responses guys.

BigAund, ll take a look at that gallery and see if I can find an example of what I am looking for.

squalkiercosa, would I be mistaken in thinking that those are all pictures of carbon fiber inserts with transparent (clear) faceplates? I'm interested in getting carbon fiber inserts with translucent (see through) colored faceplates. This is the difference between smoke (translucent black/grey) and opaque black.

The image I have is of the carbon fiber being more of a textural accent to the color of the faceplate and not the centerpiece itself.
I imagine with a translucent color like dark violet, it would near black under most lighting, and in direct light you could see the violet nature of its color and the carbon fiber texture underneath.
The smoke even darker. The wine red would be a little more visible but overall still look very dark and lend to an almost translucent maroon veiled carbon fiber look.

Is that image clear? Or better yet, does anyone have any sample pics? :xf_eek:

IMHO The whole idea of faceplate is to have clearly defined a certain pattern. I don't see a reason to pay for faceplates in order to partially hide it with colors, keep in mind carbon faceplates are dark enough to be visible even under direct sunlight, The titanium ones look very nice or go for the custom artwork for the same price. But hey! it's your money in the end. Enjoy your customs!

Am I wrong in making the distinction of insert and faceplate?
My understanding is that the is an insertion of a material being of or bearing the pattern desired, and over that the normal faceplate that can be clear or whatever color chosen.
My reason for thinking this is that you can choose UM faceplates, inserts, and shell type/color separately.

MY idea for the faceplate is to have a nice see-through color (maybe evoking the thought of a candy drop), but to have a good looking texture behind it because I
don't particularly have an interest in seeing the IEM's internals (hence the opaque shell choice).

I want the carbon fiber insert to be able to be seen, but i don't particularly want it to be the FIRST thing you see. Much rather be something you notice on the second or third look,
like a charm point that you notice after getting familiar with an item.

Is this a choice that nobody has made before...?

Not that I know.
It may be better if you just go for a clear coating over the carbon fibre.

Wow, I'm fairly surprised by the response, but somehow I know I shouldn't be.
Most people who pay for carbon fiber would want to show it off, I suppose.

When I say I would like it as an accent, I mean I would rather have it as an accent, or just not have it at all, and rather just get a translucent color faceplate by itself with maybe some artwork.

A little disappointed, but will research a bit more and guess I'll put pictures if it on here when I get them...

Probably not the best example, but here's the right side of my Merlins. Black carbon fibre under translucent black. The plate is pretty near the surface so I don't think you'll have any issues seeing the texture. The carbon fibre is a little shiny so it's pretty obvious under most forms of lighting.

DTKZ, thank you so much for that picture, it is food for thought.

I'm surprised that it looks so much like the clear faceplates.
Do you have any pictures of it under different lighting? (Btw, is that sunlight?)
It seems like regardless of what color faceplates you choose, the carbon fiber would be strongly visible.

If that is the case I think I'll definitely go with dark violet or midnight blue faceplates, but will have to rethink
the opaque black shells...

Thanks so much for that picture. That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of.
Amazing how you found that.
it even has two of the colors I was considering. I can just imagine the dark violet.
Thank you again.
