beyerdynamic dt 531s
grado sr 80s

source would be an audigy soundcard. im using the dt 531s at the moment, and they are definitly nice. but ive never heard any grados unfortunately. just curious how they would compare? (purchase is for a friend)

i think grados would be the way to go for aphex twin and other such IDMish electronica. Electronica in general actually. But then again I know nothing about beyers.

There's no way I could listen to harsher electronica on more agressive headphones.
I use Autechre as test music, I tried a pair of SR60s and I lasted all of 2 minutes!

oh yeah, i remember i used to feel like that. then i either got used to it, my headphones burned in, or i lost some high frequency hearing.

hmmm, i really hope it's one of the first 2.

How about the SR-125? I've not heard of many who buy it because it's in the middle of the cheap and middle-of-the-prestige-line. Still, it's supposed to be a slight improvement over the 80's. I found them for 135 on froogle. It fits in your wallet!
