Newbie back, I've decided that I want to get the Westones. I've researched the archives and could not find any posts comparing the two earphones.

Are the UM2's worth the extra cash? I get a decent bonus coming next week and want to treat myself.

As I posted earlier, comfort, sound and some isolation are my main needs.

You guys are great. Thanks so much for the help.

comfort and isolation should be identicle

as for sound, the um1 uses one dynamic driver, while the um2 has two for more detail and such

having neither iem, i would could safely say that the um2 is worth the extra money because the moment before you order the um1, you'll want to go back, change your order and get the um2 instead

I'd like to know if the UM2 has more instrument separation than the UM1 (by which I mean the ability to hear more at a time, as opposed to them being in different places on the soundstage).

I've never heard the UM1, but bought a pair of UM2 after having a pair of Shure e2c for about 4 months. No comparison, for me the UM2s have a better low end, and are much cleaner (more accurate) than the e2s. The UM2 are compared to IEMs like e5c...UM1 just doesn't compete in that class.

If you want to "treat" yourself, I'd get the UM2s. Then, as feh1325 said, you'll never wonder what "would have been".

Why can't the UM2 be like the E4C and be sold at around 2/3 MSRP? $300 is a hefty price to pay for someone who is considering getting $100 phones...

No one ever said life was fair. I'm sure the E4 would be a treat compared to the UM1 as well. There are quite a few on Head-Fi who actually prefer the E4 to the UM2. I've had both myself, and I've enjoyed them both. Wouldn't say one is better than the other, but what the E4 is lacking in bass compared to the UM2, is redeemed by being more balanced overall.

ok. comfort wise, both are the same. same for isolation. the only different is the size and sound. UM2 is much more detail. the bass is clean and it a joy to listen to.
