UM1 or SE210 for comfort and isolation?

I'm moving into a noisy lab at work -- many racks of computers and networking equipment -- fans, fans and fans.

From what I've read on these forums and elsewhere, I think I'm interested in the SE210 or UM1. I'd probably get the Shure PTH accessory with either one. Since I have to jump right into wearing these 8+ hours a day, I especially like what I'm reading about the comfort of the UM1s. I mostly want to make sure that they aren't lacking any isolation compared to SE210 or similarly priced IEMs.

I've spent a few hours in some borrowed E2Cs and I think I prefer the yellow foam to the black flexible plug, if that means anything.

Also, is it correct that circumaural headphones will not approach the isolation of IEMs in this price range?

I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks!
LB

EDIT: Other data: I was very happy with my Grado SR60s in my old office. I listen to alt rock, acoustic, folk, blugrass crossover and a cappella. And it still feels like I'm wearing the E2Cs I was wearing earlier today.

Problem with the Shure PTH accessory with the UM1 would be that since the UM1 has a full size cable, the microphone would not be in the optimal position for hearing what is outside. The SE-210 has the modular cable design made for the PTH device, so that is optimal. Out of the two, the UM1 is probably more comfortable, but not by a lot. They would both be good for hours with the Shure Black fomies.

I have a set of se310's atm and there is a noticeable difference in isolation/insulation than my previous HD280 pro's. Plus the Shure's are a ton more comfortable. I am fairly new to this headphone thing, so my experiences are limited. Hope this helps.

mastercheif,

Good catch about the cable lengths. Still, I'm tempted to get the UM1s and just carry the cable rolled up for the warranty period, then do some surgery.

feh1325,

Closed cans do have some appeal -- comfort and the ability to slip them off quick. But I have none to try out and see if they give enough isolation for me.

I'm wearing the borrowed E2Cs at work now and I can hear the fans between tracks --- and since we just moved into this lab, only a small fraction of the rack equipment is on yet. Either I have unrealistic expectations about isolation or the E2Cs are a bad fit.

Anyone else?

Thanks all,
LB

my vote goes to the um1, they are built very well, strong braided cable and are so comfortable. you should consider the relatively short length of the cord, if you wear a collared shirt, it would rub and somtimes dangle at the collar part

gduck,
I'm not getting what you meant to say. The UM1 cord is short?
Short cords rub?
