I have the UM1 and I'm thinking of upgrading.

Amazingly I haven't found a single direct comparison of the UM1 vs. the UM2 here or anywhere else!

I'm looking for a description of what the UM2 does better than the UM1, and if it does anything less well.

Anyone here who has used both?

No-one?
Must surely be interesting for a lot of people to know what tripple the price buys you?

an extra driver?

the UM1's are not too popular around here, but the few reviews I've read place them above the shure e3's, especially in terms of bass. The highs are still rolled off as much I believe, and they most likely are not nearly on the same level as the um2's.

He he. Yes, I knew that the UM2 uses two armature drivers.

The UM1s are very comfortable, and sound pretty nice, so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go for the UM2s eventually. I'm not sure about the comfort level from the competition, apart from the molded ones.

Thanks for your reply!

Phloding: I'm in the same boat as you. The only person I've talked to who has heard both is Flavio at Earphone Solutions. I have UM-1s and I like them better every day. I keep pulling out old CDs that I haven't listened to in years and hearing things I've never heard before.

I like the way my UM1's fit, the way they're almost invisible, and the fact that the cord has already survived some serious abuse. I am also curious to hear from someone who has heard both to see if the UM2s are worth the extra $200.

I finally decided to register on head-fi just so i could answer this question

I happen to own both the um1s and the um2s and I like both of them very much.

Truthfully, if you think your um1s sound really good to you, then the $200 difference is probably not worth it because the um2s are not going to give you anywhere near triple or even double the performance if the um1s already sound really good. UM2s have improved bass and does slightly better in the trebles.

If you absolutely love the sound of um1s and really want to get the best possible universal westone sound signature, go for it. But otherwise, I recommend keeping the um1s and getting a pair of different high end IEMs to try such as UE super.fi 5 pro or shure e4c, e5c.
