Anyone have any experience with the ultrasone cans that Jan sells at Meier? they look rather interesting and I am looking for more variety in my listening experience.

Jan said that they were bested by the senns in every area. Look in the archives for a piece where he compares grado, senn, ultra, and beyer.

Dear 2 channel,

The Ultrasones are headphones with a very special character that can't be compared to any other headphone I know of.

The HFI-2000 is very like the AKG-501 with a little bit more treble. However, what's so special is its complete lack of aggressiveness, even at higher volumes. The phone doesn't show all the details on the recording and sound is slightly diffuse, but is very well suited for easy-going long-term listening. I always describe these as a set for wine and candle light :-)

Don't expect too much of the in front location though. It's hardly noticable, except if you have an amp with crossfeed. In combination with crossfeed this phone indeed gives a very natural soundstage (at least for a headphone it does)

The HFI-600 is a different piece of cake. For a closed headphone is is surprisingly uncolored. More dynamically than the HFI-2000. For its price I highly value this phone. There are better closed systems, but they cost more.

Cheers,

Jan

So, does that make the HD600 suitable for Whiskey and Headbanging?

Jan,

By your description, how would the HFI-2000 compare to the HP890? Also, what beyer headphone would you say the HFI-600 is closest in sound to, and how does it compare?

I have casually wondered about these for a while, actually.

edit: The more I think about the HFI-600, the more questions I have. These are closed headphones that give an uncolored sound and have low impedance. Isn't it generally known that best headphone sound comes from designs with high impedance and which are open?

I really wish I could try these. Looking around the ultrasone website, I really like their design philosophies.

Dear RMSzero,

The HP890 has a deeper (but somewhat boomy) bass and a less diffuse soundfield.

The only closed designs of Beyer that I know well are the DT770 and the DT831. I would say as for soundbalance the HFI-600 is somewhere in the middle. Less treble than the DT831 and less (overblown) bass than the DT770. Actually I find it a rather well-balanced headphone.

Of course, like every closed headphone in this price range, the HFI-600 shows some coloration. However, these are surprisingly little. Open designs generally sound better but for certain applications closed systems are preferred.

The impedance is less of an issue unless you're really looking for the ultra-best. With portable equipment lower impedances actually are better.

Cheers,

Jan
