Which one will be better for gaming without virtual surround software? Just can't make up my mind...

HFI 2400 will have more soundstage because of the much much larger earcups alone, not even taking into account that they're open.

I haven't heard the 2400s but my 780s probably aren't what I would choose for an open soundstage. 
 
Is there any reason why you are only looking at ultrasone?

Yep, I have the HFI-2400. These headphones are excellent for gaming, mainly because they are open and that the soundstage is incredible.

Haven't used them with Dolby Headphone (which I believe is what the Xonar line uses) but I can confirm the HFI-2400's are excellent for gaming using CMSS-3D Headphone.  I don't have the 780's to compare to but they handily romp the DJ1's for positioning accuracy and soundstage, couldn't bear to attach the mod mic base to something that looks so nice though so I still switch back to the DJ1's when I need voice chat.

Subjectively, I prefer the 2400 in every way, but the far better staging, and imaging of the 2400 is clear.  It takes a bit to find the sweet spot for placement to get the most out of the 2400, but after that it's automatic.
 
One of my favorite 4 cans regardless of price.  For the 200 dollar price they are a superb value.

yeah Hey I have a question about the HFI-2400. When I play them out of my Mac and my iPhone, they are not loud, even at maximum volume. Is there a way to fix this?
