I have singled out these two choices based on reviews, however I would like to hear other headfiers opinions. They will be used with a Kenwood HD309GB or an imod with Ray Samuels Hornet (m). Any advice on comparisons between the two would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance.

IMO, these two serve different purposes, one are good fopr portability, and the other for home use, the IEM are good for isolation purposes, but other than that, sorry, the soundstage is not my cup of tea, are you serious in going outside with the Editions on your head, they are not so small, honestly...

Edition 9 is very good, not sure, but I have not heard any IEM yet, that can even compete with other heapdhones, even at a completelly different league and lower price points...UE9 is not as portable, and isolation is not as good neither...Also not sure but the hornet is not an amp designed for IEM, the tomahawk will be a best suited choice...

Also amps for IEM need low gain and a great amount of feedback to cancel the noise, ans IEm are very prone to pick it up...

You have two very different headphones there. If you want portable, go with the UE-10s, if you want home, then the edition 9s would be better, but you'll probably not want a portable amp and source with those either.

IEMs sacrifice sound quality for portability & isolation. I prefer the sound out of my headphones over my IEMs, but lugging headphones around is not practical. For home use, I'd go with the ED9. But with your current setup, the ED9s probably won't be showing their true potential.

I thought so too, but plugged into my iMod/Micro Amp the UE9s sound pretty darned good. I expected more of a difference from the Opera to the portable unit but it sounds so good I stopped trying to compare and just listened.

However, as others have said, I wouldn't wear them to the mall. I'd use IEMs.

not sure if i agree with that statement. i'll put my ue-10pros up against anything i've heard when it comes to sound quality. the only thing lacking is soundstage, and that is to be expected.

I honestly think that the UE9 would be a loss of money, if played through a portable (being it a dap or an imod + portable amp). They just can't show their full potential.
The UE10, instead, wouldn't need anything more than a Kenwood HD30GB9, or iMod+Tomahawk.

What player are you using with the UE10?
