The new hfi 580 is new and revamped with the slogic plus housing derived from the ed9 so it should be better than the old dj1 but the new dj1 is also like the 580, new and improved. So again the new dj1 could be better if it is tuned with tighter bass

yes, HFI580 are less price than DJ1pro BUT DJ1 revised spec (2008) are lower price than HFI580...well, who knows ? for some1 that hadn't own an DJ1 classic before (like you) better to grab the DJ1 revised spec...and me, that had owned an DJ1 classic now would upgrade to HFI580...and for the comment that you've heard on headphone.com.au are not too accurate since i found that HFI580 (out of the box, zero hour of burn-in) are a whole lot better than an 400 hours burn-in DJ1 (classics)...IMO !

too bad that i like the coiled cable <3m from DJ1 MORE, than a straight cable 3m on HFI580...

i suppose i should say something on the dj 1 pro.

my reference has always been the beyerdynammic dt880 and the sennheiser hd600 for overall enjoyment so that is my frame and home country.

firstly the dj 1 pro are as with all ultrasones, designed better for those who have some girth to their noodles. my noodle is too thin and these slip down quite a bit just like with the 3d wing of the audio technica phones.

i fixed this mainly by getting the proline quick switch pads and replaced the strange pads that come with the dj 1 pro.

my short review is based with those pads in mind.

Music:
fast, punchy but not a huge quantity of bass. it is more similar to the dt880 than the hd600 in this regard. they are not warm either in the bass but quick and quite balanced.

mids:
thankfully not too hifi like. they don't seem to be brought out much - they seem to be good for instruments rather than for voice in compared even to the dt880. i am not a mids guy though

treble:
not tiring but does not send me with shivers from pleasure.

these phones are probably built with some nuetrality in mind or for beat and treble matching. if the mids had been brought forward more or the bass given more decay, it think they would not be as good for beat matching as you need speed rather than sweetness.

other than fit and isolation (hardly any compared to my fav closed phones: dt770) i do enjoy them quite a bit.

they are however for the price, the worst built hifi phones from any company i have ever seen. i would have hoped that ultrasone could have considered a good band in its phone line that would fit more people as well as gripping arms that do not look like they could be ripped apart.

stage is good and they are nice but these are ... ultrasones. too much physical bad with the good.

i have not gotten much further on my review. i have only covered the minimals of comfort.

sound wise though: they are phenomenal. not so bass heavy but have that soft mylar driver sound that makes mids and higher bass gentle.

other than the terrible fit for me, they are indeed an amazing phone (oh yeah and virtually no isolation-how can these work for dj?)

I just picked up the older version, since it was B-Stock for $130. Quick impressions are good, though these are not a great all-rounder. You usually want to keep them away from acoustic, and anything without the intention of having heavy bass. The bass in the phones is amazing, and when powered (I can't say properly powered, since I only run them out of a PA2v2 and NAD Receiver) it sounds very tight, and punchy to the extreme. Mids and Trebles are fine, and there's almost no rolloff in the trebles (I'm used to HD595s). I'll post more findings later, and a pic, if anyone cares.
