Ultimate computer speakers

Running a computer's outputs through a receiver or pre-amp/processor of a hi-fi stereo or home theater would likely beat any "normal" computer speakers.

I'll put in a vote for my Boston Acoustics BA7500s, though.

Hey there,

I'm using this at home fed from the porta corda (which is not even necessary) either with the PC or JVC CDP as source and they're more than sufficient for any applications whatsoever.

Specs: http://www.syrincs.de/new/m3bl.htm

Superb soundquality for the money (almost comparable to my DT250-250 I'd say). The satellites as well as the sub are top notch and the sound is very neutral and extended. The bass goes down to about 30 herz effortlessly even at wall-shaking volumes, mids and highs are always there in right proportions.

Really recommended for it's price (I payed ~550 euro).

I Hope I could help,
Roland

Bit odd, as the website says that the response goes down 3dB already at 45hz and down 10dB at 39hz...

Gotta be the "1500 watt" 4 inch tall efforts that come with the computer?

I took a hammer to a pair of these many moons ago and found a solitary "1 watt" full range driver inside the horrible plastic housing!

Get yourself a pair of magnetically shielded "Hi-Fi" speakers from a known manufacturer (B&W, Tannoy, Monitor Audio etc.) and arm yourself with a 20 W RMS amp...... they'll blow all these crappy plastic "computer speakers" into the bin where they belong!

And...... no need for a "sub woofer" Subwoofer in most of these computer speakers with a diameter of 6 inches... SUB what exactly??? Total joke.

For something with a built in amp and everything ready to go, the Acoustic Energy Aego is a decent sounding system. It retails for about 399, so a little on the high side considering the computer as the source for the music. However, this unit can accept RCA line level inputs, so you can use a decent (non-portable) CD source if you choose... it won't play to deafening levels, but it does have a nice, clean sound with decent bass and decent imaging. This thing won't replace a high end system (although by the reviews it's received you would think so), but it's a good enough unit that you can live with it if you had to.

Hooking up a home theater system with your PC is definitely inadequate if you ask me. PC speakers are meant for near field sound production and home theater systems are exact opposite. If you're using a home theater system as your PC speaker, not only you'll get the inaccurate sound, but also will you destory the whole image (unless you're sitting 3 feets away from your monitor). IMHO, a decent PC speaker will sound better than home theater systems for computer use.

Just a friendly advice.

Now THAT'S a first! Is this your personal experience on this matter or just speculation?

This is my own personal experience. In the beginning, I was like everyone else and thought that using a home theater system as a PC speaker would be an awesome idea for both music listening and DVD watching. After I got my Monsoon FPF-1000, I immediately hooked up to my PC and you know wut? I wasn't impressed! In fact, I was little bit more than pissed off. I worked off my butt and spent an arm and a leg for this system and now wut I got was nothing but ****! I even thought my MM-2000 was much better in music production. After a few days burn-in, the sound became fuller and apparently more natural. However, it still had not lived up with my expectation. One day, I was browsing through my CD collection with the music on. (the shelf was 5 feets away from my desk) I started noticing a huge improvment on audio imaging. I really thought that I was standing in front of a live band and listening to their performance for a moment. The effect was like looking through freshly polished glass that tiny sonic details and subtle reverberations became easy to hear and the position of every sound in 3-D space snapped into place. I was holding a few CDs with my jaw opened about 3" wide. It's speechless. I really don't know how to describe it. Since that day, I realized using a home theater system as a PC speaker was one of the worst decisions that I ever made in my life. But I was glad that I discovered it.

Do some experiment and you'll know exactly wut I'm talking about.
