UK to USA courier up to £2500 insurance?

Ask me about the time I shipped my cat from the UK to the US with me when I moved back home if you wanna talk steep transatlantic shipping :D.
With the amount of insurance you're after 150 quid to ship and insure seems like what one would expect. Probably 50 goes to actually posting it, and the rest to insuring.

I know that for posting within the UK Royal Mail insure up to £2,500. I have a feeling though that it is very much reduced for overseas posting.

£150 seems steep, but it would be a lot steeper if your package got lost. Although I share your pain of having to spend that. I’d like to think that handing over a package to a courier with the stature of DHL would automatically mean it is within a safe system.
