Hello there,

I've done a few transfers on head-fi and I've given a few friends my account number and sort code to allow money to be transferred or banked into my account.

Question is, are there any dangers in giving out my sort code, account number and name?

Thank you.

If these numbers are like the routing number and account number on the cheques we have here in the states, it wouldn't be too hard to drain your account. Your friends would just have to figure out how much you have and forge a cheque with your signature and those numbers. I mean, you would have to have some pretty shady friends to suspect that though...

Don't fret too much. This sort of info has been around for years - especially when people used cheques to buy things and have them posted home.

The bank would be responsible if funds went from your account without your proper authority (though a bit of a pain to be sure getting it all sorted).

Just be sensible with giving out too much information such as date of birth, NI number, years at address, home address, mothers maiden name, and full bank details.
