after trying these at the last seattle meet, i was surprised to find how much i liked them. in a word, they are "engaging" but without that "wow-factor" that some phones have. after trying the shure e4 i went back to the s.f5p again and spent some time listening. the e4 were more neutral but sounded unmusical and a bit boring compared with the s.f5p. from a technical standpoint the e4 are probably a better canalphone, but just do not have the fun factor the s.f5p have.
i bought a pair that night, in black. the whole package is a class act (except for the impossible to open plastic container). included is a well made real leather pouch with the ue logo stamped on it. the real standout is the metal case, which opens on both ends to reveal a very secure place for the canalphones and slots for the tools and adapters. very nice.
the cord is shorter than i'm used to, but workable. it is also very thin but supple and doesn't tangle like a cheap cord. the canalphones are large and angular, and if you are used to ety's they can seem clunky at first. included are also 5 different very comfortable tips. i used the largest, which provides a seal right at the opening of my ear canal. the split section of the cord has a small sliding clip to cinch it up, and there is a bendable wire section near the ears which can be used to loop over the ears. everything is very well thought out here. no need for modifications.
using an sr71 amp, these very efficient canalphones do not need much volume to play loud. the bass drivers bloom a bit over the treble and mids, but but effect is of detailed full-sized cans: a very large sound with a wide headstage for canalphones. if you are using an amp with these, i'd recommend something very quiet like the sr71. the s.f5p are very efficient and will pick up any noise in the signal.
ue has made a canalphone that is a lot of fun to use and listen to music on. you won't try them and think "audiophile cans", but there is a lot to like about their sound: full-sized can-like, powerful bass, good mids and highs, minimum of flash and maximum musical enjoyment.
