Hello,

I´m allowed to buy new headphones, finally :-P Yea, allowed... my gf wasn´t happy when I told her that I want new headphones... and that I´m going to spend 1000 usd (more or less). but after some discussions and telling her that i could listen to my music with the speakers in our living room :-) ...

I wanted to buy a pair of closed headphones and an open/semi-closed pair of headphones (so i won´t bother anybody at night).

I was thinking about getting the Audio-Technica ATH-W1000 (closed) or maybe "just" the AKG 271 Studio. I had the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro, but I couldnt stand them clamping my head. I also thought about the Ety ER4P´s - but I don´t really like canalphones.

For the open/semi-closed headphones i was thinking about the Sennheiser HD 650, Grado RS-1 or RS-2, Sony MDR-CD3000 or MDR-SA3000.

So which headphones would you buy if you´d 1000usd? Any recommendations? The list above only shows the phones I´m currently interested in...

I listen to pop/rock/chillout/house/electro/bigbeat

oh, i forgot to mention that i use a rega ear or cmoy to drive my headphones

thanks

What? You've been "allowed" to buy something for yourself? What is she, your mother? I betcha she doesn't ask for your permission when she buys something for herself...and she expects you to pay for it!!

Anyway, the Sennheiser HD 650, Grado RS-1 or RS-2 are all open so alot of sound leagage...but quite a few people say that open phones generally sound better than closed. But open phones leak so much sound that it would disturb anyone nearby. For that type of music I would checkout the Grados. I have Grado RS-1 and they're perfect...I've used the bigger Sennheiser (granted not the newer ones) but they do seem too laid back, I prefer a slightly detailed/forward sounding headphone/speaker.

I would buy a decent set when noise leagage isn't a problem, and another closed set or canasl for late night listening.

The CD3000 is one of the best all around headphones I have tried so far, good for everything I have tried on them, they are closed (but they let some sound from the outside come through) not as much as leakeage, are extremelly comfortable, and do not require an aftermarket cable to be fully enjoyable (but some members will suggest you go for one anyway) Now we have a few options for amps for it, os there is no problem with it now.

Let me be the first to suggest a better Headphone amp (PPA, Gilmour Lite, SR-71, etc.) and a headphone of your choice with that budget.

oookay, maybe i´m gonna sell the rega ear and buy a cec hd53 headamp, get the Audio-Technica ATH-W1000 and the Sony MDR-SA3000´s and finally be happy. i also thought about a smaller stax system. but from what i´ve read i´m not sure if i would be really happy with them. i think my first electrostatic phones/speakers should be some martin logan speakers

but they´ll have to wait a few more years
