so today, i listened to my turntable for the first time..

i grabbed a preamp that my dad had, hooked it up, plugged a k240m in it, and listened for a little, but noticed that "old" record noise, or static or however you want to call it. is there any way to get rid of it??

im not sure if it was because the lp was dusty or not?? (it was in sleeve when i took it out, so wasnt really dusty)

Off my head I can think of 3 types of noises that a playing record can show up.
Static, surface, scratch.
If it is static, an anti static gun or anti static fluid applied with a record cleaning brush is your 1st port of call. Cleaning with the brush can also tidy up a lot of the surface noise.
Scratches are a different problem as far as tackling them is concerned.

Your record is dirty.

They usually don't look it unless really filthy, but they accumulate crud over the years.

You don't need an expensive machine to clean the record, either. You can do it in the kitchen sink. Best if you have a sprayer, but water at full blast works well, too. Just spray the record, while being careful not to get the label wet. If you do get the label wet, dry it off. Usually it's no big deal.

When you're done spraying it off, put the record on a clean towel and PAT DRY with paper towels. DO NOT RUB the record. Just pat it. Let it dry for an hour or two and give it another spin. It should sound much better.
