This isn't exclusively a headamp thread, but a stereo thread in general. I've had mostly SS equipment my whole life. Not long ago, I got an Audio Note CD player with a tubed output.

I find music sounds smoother and less fatiguing, even though I have a SS int. amp.

I've wanted to get seperates for a while now and am considering tubes. My question is if I got a tube preamp and a SS power amp, would I get the best of both worlds? Or should I go all tubes?

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Check with AudioAsylum... if you haven't already.

I recall seeing a thread / discussion on this topic. As I recall they suggested the combination is good, because you "get the best of both worlds" - for a reasonable investment. I would expect this to be especially true with inefficient speakers (e.g. Maggies, etc.) - which require a lot of current / power to achieve their full potential. The cost of an equivalent tube amp would be pretty significant.

Although, I suspect "tube fans" will disagree.
