Hey guys... how critical is the placement of a tube amp ? the reason I ask is that I am playing with my new amp right now, and I've placed it 2 or 3 ft from my source but when I plug my 'phones in, even with the volume all the way down, I'm picking up a slight hum. I have NO experience in these things at all so any comment would be great.

make sure your interconnects aren't crossing power cables. that is what ended up being the cause of the hum in my system.

OK, I checked, made sure of good seperation....still humming

Is the hum present in both channels? Is the hum there without a source connected? If so, you might try plugging the amp into a different outlet in another room to see if the hum is still present. Refrigerator motors, flourescent lights, etc. can introduce 60 hz hum through the lines. What amp do you have?

I have an ASL MG-Head OTL-H with 2 RCA 6BQ5's and a Mullard CV4004... I tried another room, with lights off, only electrical appliance plugged in is the alarm clock.. still hums. The FAQS I read don't have hum as a sign of a tube going, so I figure i's not likely to be that, right ?

The hum's in both channels....

Is a small amount of hum normal or should there be absolute silence ?
