I can't get this card to work correctly in 4.1 for the life of it. The only game I got it to work in was GTA Vice City. Farcry, Counter-strike, gunbound, etc. would only play sound in 2.1 no matter what I do to the audio settings.

In the Audio Deck (1.43d drivers), Speaker Config is 4 channel, Digital Output is disabled, all 4 speakers work when using the "drum test" in the audiodeck, Immerzio 3D gaming support and Stereo EXpander are off (but nothing happens when I turn them on)

Anyone have a clue?

You'll have to face this, but that Chaintech card is not the best choice for surround gaming. There are many games out there which will only support 2.1 or 5.1 setups, and using 4.1 setups will default to the 2.1 mode. Furthermore, that Chaintech card supports only generic DirectSound 3D at driver level - and no other "legitimate" 3D gaming APIs.

The major reason to buy that AV-710 card is that it's a great soundcard for music at a low price. Unfortunately, that great sound will only work if the card is jumpered to enable the high-quality DAC which delivers high-quality sound through the center left/right rear output jack, which effectively limits that card to 2-channel stereo only. If you're using even a 4.1 setup, you'll end up with all sound going through that crappy Via AC '97 codec, which limits all audio support to 16/48 max.

Soundstorm without a doubt. Lower CPU usage due to hardware acceleration (except in Doom3 where I do use Chaintech

). But if you want to save a hassle, you can use the chaintech too.

If you want to do surround gaming through the AV-710, disable the high sample rate mode, switch to 4-channel mode, and enable Immerzio 3D gaming support. Of course like Eagle_Driver said the quality won't be that great, though it certainly isn't worse than the onboard sound on my Abit NF7-S.
