...so... how long do transports last? I've been told anything from 5.000 to more than 100.000 hours. And what is most likely to fail first, the laser diode or the mechanical assembly?
If I understand correct the abbreviations in the manual, my Plextor Premium writer's expected lifetime is 60.000 hours (but I might be wrong). A CD player transport may be a different matter, though.

Good question, I have had my Denon DCD-1100 for 20 years and still goes strong. At times it has a hard time recognizing CD-R's but I do not complain. As far a sound I find it quite warm and appealing.

my last sony cdplayer has lasted 10 years so far and still works a dream. Can depend sometimes if you just get unlucky.

I know, I was refering to the average expected lifetime. I'm pretty sure there are players out there doing their job flawlessly after 15, even 20 years of usage, and I've heard stories of dead transports after as little as 2 years. But how many hours can I resonably expect my CD player to work?

My favorite transport in my stable is a 1994 Micromega Drive Two... no problems there.
