Sup.

Going off to college and I'm looking for some nice headphones. Basically, all I'm looking for is a high-quality pair that'll last for around $200. If it helps any, I really love Trance music. I'll be using them exclusively at mah computer. An attached mic would be awesome, but not necessary. I'm more concerned with sound quality than any mic. Also, I like headphones that don't engulf your ears, but rest on them instead.

Right now I'm using a Sennheiser P61, which I've had for about 3 or 4 years. Even though I love these guys, they're not even designed for quality. So far I've looked at AKG's K 172 HD, but I don't know where to branch off from there.

I also know nothing about all this amping shizz. So yeah, I appreciate all your guyses advice in advance.

Maybe some Grados. Try to find some 225s. They will sit on your ear as you like.

I have ES7, and yeah they are great for trance. I listen to lotsa trance. But why do you want headphones that rest ON your ears instead of around them? As great as the ES7 sounds (I LOVE the ES7), I can't wear them for more than 3 hours or so, due to physical discomfort

Closed headphones are great with Trance... headphones like HD215, HD205, HD280.

and in Sony..checkout the DJ grade headphones..

even Stanton Prodj 3000 are amazing..

why i recommend these are because Worlds top DJ's use Closed headphones in their Studios for listening Trance.

I have to second the 280s (with a bass boost on the EQ), but I'd love to hear some other closed phones for comparison. Do Denon D2000s sound good w/ trance?

Grados work, but only for the more industrially-oriented trance. Stuff like Goa, Psy, Acid.

On-ear headphones generally hurt more [often] than over ear. But what ever.

Es7's are great, Sennheiser HD465's are decent quality and on ear, with plenty of bass.

From what I read, and have heard with my own ears, the 280's arent the best choice. They clamp your head like a vice, and are very balances, so there is no warmth to the sound that you might enjoy without EQ.

Yeah, they need EQ. They work surprisingly well once you do, though.

As for the clamping... I LIKE the clamping.

I also like my heavy-ass Koss Pro4/AAAs, wear those for ten minutes and the Senn HD280s feel like a pair of fluffy little clouds.

why do you want the phones that sit on your ears? they are more uncomfortable! anyways, here are my suggestions:

on ear;
Grado SR-60/80/225
Alessandro MS-1
Audio-technica ES7

around ear;
Beyerdynamic DT770pro-80
Audio-technica ATH-A900

then, buy a zalman clip-on mic for ~$10 and you're done.

also, make sure your source feeding the headphones are somewhat decent.

some people love pain maybe...

clamp your headphones around a tissue box for 2 nites....and then they will loosen up and stop clamping your head.

be sure to loosen up the headband so they dont snap.
