I have a classified on an outside forum (Canuck Audio Mart) where I'm selling a set of Fiio FH5s IEMs.

Post has been there forever getting no traction, but yesterday a guest (not a member, so no history and no feedback) contacted me asking if I'm willing to trade for an Xduoo hybrid amp.

My first thought was "cool amp, I might be down for this," but my second thought was "pretty good odds I get scammed though."

Am I being too paranoid? Any advice for doing this transaction safely if it is legit?

No chance in hell I'd do business with anyone on any forum that has zero feedback. I was scammed out of almost 1100.00 USD here on Head-Fi by a user that had 5 positive transactions. I eventually got my cash back from Paypal, but it took awhile.

Yeah, I guess I have visions (assuming it's a local trade) of getting the amp home and discovering a dead channel, or releasing the magic smoke, etc.

Sucks that crappy people have ruined things for the rest of us...

If the guy is local then ask to meet him in a public spot with access to an electric outlet. If the amp works and you like what you hear, then make the swap.

If he isn't local, the only way i'd do a trade with an unknown individual is to have him ship you the amp first, but he could knowingly have a defective item and then claim that you ruined it while in your possesion, which could cause all sorts of drama and headaches.

Just my personal opinion, but unless it's a public, face to face transaction, I'd steer clear.

Fun follow-up:

When the above incident happened, the post was just a few days away from expiring. I relisted, and now - with the relist just a few days away from expiring - I get another message on CAM from another guest, offering to trade for a different piece of gear (HD-6XX this time).

The timing in both cases and the fact they're both guests feels just a bit too coincidental.

I never deal with anybody on CAM unless they have history.
Having said that I sold a pair of Grado Hemp's to a guy a few weeks ago that was new to CAM. However, he paid by EMT and so there was zero risk to me.

I do approach people for trades semi-regularly (I did just today), but I want to see dozens of ratings and some history.

I love CAM, but you have to be careful.

I have bought two limited edition Grados from Canuck Audio Mart. The experience/service was excellent. Then again, the seller was an experienced user of CAM, selling excellent gear, had many favourable ratings, three unfavourable ratings. Due diligence, caveat emptor.

So you guys are saying I'd have better luck if I were dealing in Grados?

Three bad ratings? I have never had a seller or buyer with that many. Congrats on a smooth deal.

With a ‘five-star’ seller carrying many favourable ratings over a long stretch and over a wide range of excellent gear, even these

can become a ‘gilt-edge’ transaction 😜🤣

3 out of > 1000 isn’t too bad. The ‘3’ might have been hungover - going by comments …

I want to see Zeos review those.
