For this new year I was planning to upgrade my "audio system" which consists of sound card and headphones and both are currently of less than dirt quality. Because I spend most of my life in front of my PC and majority of this time is accompnied by music I thought I shouldnt grudge too much and make a long term investment .

So I decided to take as a a sound card audigy 2 - it was an easy choice (by most reviews). But as to headphones ..... after spending some time lurking on this forum ,reading reviews ,comparing prices etc I start feeling that I am lost in different possibilties without hope and can't choice myself .I beg this respected communyt to help me though I understand that you are tired of same questions every day

So I need headphones to listen music which consists mostly of all kinds of metal(which is rather diverse style representing practically all range of musical instruments, music temps , vocal parties etc. ) and to play some games ( a CS and some flight simulators) . So I want them not only sound good but also have a good positional sound. They also should be comfortable for wearing up to 12 hours and have rather long cord , also I think that closed ones are better for overall feeling and sound positioning( my current headphones are closed and I like the fell very much -sadly its only thing I like about em)

Koss Portapro - According to those boards best price/sound ever ,but I dont like they short cord and open style . And I dont know how good they are for gaming..

Sony MDR V6 - According to those boards again they have not very good positional sounds ,though everything else looks pretyy atractive to me .

What about Audio technica ATHM40FS ,ATH 910 ,ATH M30?
Maybe any models form Beyerdynamic ,Sehnheiser which can suit my needs??

If portapro were closed and had long cord I would go with them without doubt ,but If I am ready to spent a bit more maybe there is something which can suit better?

Hi DMM... Welcome to Head-Fi, Sorry about your Wallet

I would have said that you're an ideal candidate for a pair of Sony MDR-CD1700s... where are you?

They can be bought in London from two or three shops in Tottenham Court Road for £80 which'd take you to $120ish plus shipping if you're in the US... Over budget, yes... but look pretty ideally suited to your requirements...

Well 1700s are really out of reach (Couldnt find em in US) and a bit over priced.

But I just found about deal on HD-580 at neweggg Grand total with shipping comes to $135 - $20 =$105 . I like this deal more and more each minute ,conisdering the overall praise of HD-580 here... What do you think is it best deal for $100 ? the detriment is requirment of an amp - I really dont want another piece of hardware now ' especially such specialized as a headphone amp ....

Yes, if you're on a strict budget... and don't want too much stuff cluttering up your desk space... PM JMT on here, and ask if he can build you an CHA47 that is geared for the Senns...

Whilst not strictly speaking, competing with the big boy amps, the plucky little CHA really does give you a step up from the standard headphone outs you get... and it all fits in a peppermint tin to boot... not much clutter

Grado SR60s. These are easily driven from any source, and should still provide some decent imaging and soundstaging info!!

Sony V6's really don't give much directional info. I just listened to mine on a recording in which my Senn 600s had voices coming from behind me at various times. With the Sonys it was just dead center left, not behind me!!

For a mere $15 over the price you were willing to pay for the Sony CD1700s you might look more into the reco from Duncan!! He's pretty good with cans and knows quite a bit!! They're discontinued, so finding them in the near future will start getting harder and harder!!!

There's my .02 worth. Hopefully you find something you need soon and can report back and tell us about them!!!

Duncan:
Since you mentioned the CD1700s, how do they sound compared to the cd2000s? The CD2000 sounds like the "successor" to cd1700. Thanks.

Hi engk

I can only go on what other people say... the CD2000s are more open than the CD1700s, so sound thinner in the bass, but have a crisper top end... whereas the CD1700s seem to be a little subdued up there...

Sorry I can't be of more help...

The CD2Ks are a real 'love them or hate them' headphone according to what i've seen about them here...

I just picked up some Philips HP910 from Wallijonn, who found them on ebay for $50 (new). I would have a very tough time finding anything that would even come close for that sort of money. Down side is that they are uncomfortable to some people, and they are very position sensitive. Oh yeah, the headband is designed to grab and yank hairs, but that can be fixed.

For more $, I am finding the Beyers tough to beat for the money. I've only owned the DT831 and the DT250-250 so far, but they have been most impressive. Beyer seems to do a good job of dialing in the sound, and I love the bass response! DT770s are on my xmas list, as are the HG880s.
