I've had this stock unit for some time now, and finally got around to doing the ps mods and the swenson mod. I took the unit apart yesterday and noticed that the cd mechanism vibrates rather violently, it looks as if the shaft is out of balance or something. I've applied vinyl dampening to all the inside surfaces and keep the player on isolation feet, but there is obviously much more vibration coming from the spinning mechanism than externally. Just wondering if there is any way to fix this? (I'm not willing to fill the player up with rope caulk)

This vibration is with all discs or only those imbalanced due to screen printing on one side or poor manufacturing of the medium?

Is there a top clamp you can remove and examine for wear? ALthough, if you can't get another one I suppose it's irrelevant if you identify the problem.

If the bearing in the bottom is worn some relief might come from lubing it with a very viscous lube, heavyweight oil approaching grease. If a bearing you could try to find a suitable replacement bearing, though it may be difficult to get out if pressed-in, or difficult to get a new bearing it without damaging it. Without the disc in, see if you can wiggle the shaft a lot with your fingers, if there's a lot of play in it. By "lot" I really mean "any", since at those RPMs any play in the bearing may be excessive.

what's wrong with rope caulk?

easy solution, given the mechanism usually doesn't vibrate at all, at least not in a manner you're describing: Go to ebay and grab a dead unit that doesn't play. Gut it, replace mechanism in yours with the one from the dead unit. Ideally, get a unit that doesn't power up - those are cheap and most likely not to have a transport issue. $10 with shipping should fix things

when I got my 3950, I got me a spare unit just in case. so far I haven't had to touch it.
