Top 5 metal bands

Uh, Metallica during their prime, yeah, but...as it stands, wouldn't the Scorpions or AC/DC outdo them? I agree with Black Sabbath being #1, though. MHO.

Also, both of our opinions are very old school, I must say. How about Opeth?

I'm waiting for KR... or someone to pipe in here.

Scorpions?!

Opeth? Never heard of them.

How about Helloween? Or Iron Maiden?

I really dont think Megadeth should be up there, Slayer definitely deserves a spot though.

Opeth is an inutterably boring outfit. You can put them in the cut out bin with Cradle of Filth. The Gathering does what they do with MUCH more heart and soul.

Godflesh
Tool
Melvins
nobody else comes close
nobody else comes close

I've heard the Black Sabbath albums too much for them to have any impact for me anymore. No reflection on their talent or importance to the genre, but I just can't listen to War Pigs again.

Ah...here comes KR... with a straight razor, no doubt to split hairs about what is metal, heavy metal, symphonic metal, hard rock, grindcore, hardcore, ad nauseum.

Metal, Hmmmm....
Where did that term come from?
Motorhead?
Deep Purple?
UFO?
Mahogany Rush?
oh my...Rubicon?

I agree with most of the bands...anyone remember Megadeath?
I think Metal started in the seventies with guitar heavy bands like The Who, Led Zep, Jimi and bands like Ten Years After.
How bout KISS? Alice Cooper? Rush? The Sex Pistols? and God no....the Clash! I know I am missing some bands....
metal...I don't have the ears for it anymore, but I sure do like the origins.

How about

Judas Priest
UFO/Michael Schenker Group
Deep Purple/Dio era Rainbow
Iron Maiden
Sabs

On the outside looking are:

Scorps
Metallica
Slayer
Tool
AC/DC

Rush to me is more progressive than metal. Although the four or five Rush albums are definitely influenced by Zep.

I like DarkAngel's aproach - METAL is too diversified to just name 5 bands as your favorites... Although I don't like "classifications" and despite mine beeing not be entirely "orthodox" :-

CLASIC METAL bands
-Black Sabbath
-Led Zeppelin
-Iron Maiden
-Deep Purple
-Metallica(first albums)

DOOM, GOTH, ATHMOSPHERE METAL...
-Tristania
-My Dying Bride
-Theatre of tragedy
-Lacuna Coil & The Gathering
-Cradle of Filth

PROGRESSIVE ,SYMPHONIC METAL...
-Dream Theater
-Symphony X
-Therion
-Nightwish, Edenbridge, Pain of Salvetion
-Queensriche

THRASH, GRIND, NU METAL ...
-Tool, A Perfect Circle
-Panthera
-Megadeth
-Korn
-Slayer

POWER METAL...
-Helloween
-Gamma Ray
-Virgin Steele
-Blind Guardian
-Hammerfall

I would put all the PROG.ROCK Classic bands like Rush, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and many others under the same umbrella of (heavy) metal because to me all these "classifications" are very flexible and arguable to begin with...
