hmmm... a difficult question. i am also factoring in the necessity of amp/no amp into this -- so all these are my values based on an unamped system (but with possible upgrade to an amp...) i'll break my list up a little bit, from least expensive to most:

portable:
1. $10-20 sennheiser mx400/500
2. $10-25 koss ksc-35 (nowadays 50... i suppose)

mid-fi:
3. $55-80 sony mdr-v6
4. $60-85 sennheiser hd280

mid-hi-fi:
5. $120-150 sennheiser hd580 (stock)
6. $120-160 grado sr-225

hi-fi:
7. $210-250 etymotic er-4s/p
8. $300-340 audio technica a-1000
9. $300-350 sennheiser hd600 (w/ cable upgrade)
10. $350-400 sony cd3000

actually, reading back over this list... this is a VERY hard question because there are so many factors that go into which headphones are right for whom, for what situation, and so on and so forth. but i guess this list stands for me in terms of pure sound vs. price comparison, for my listening tastes and preferences.

By value I take it you mean that if I think its worth the cash. Ordered by sound quality:

Stax Omega II
Stax SR-404
Etymotic ER4S
Sennheiser HD600
Sennheiser HD580
Grado SR-225
Grado SR-60
AKG K501
Koss KSC-50
Sennheiser MX400

Ones that missed the cut for value:
Grado RS-1
Sony CD3000

Too many to list that missed the cut for sound quality. Some notable ones are DT931 DT831 DT250 HD590 HD570 HD500.

I'd love to audition R10, Eggos, AT, and DTxx0 series.

I assume you mean headphones that we've actually heard and LIKE.

1) Sennheiser Orpheus
2) Senn HD600
3) Stax Signature II
4) Grado RS-1
5) Beyerdynamic DT-250-250

Sorry, I don't like other headphones.
