Does anybody else feel there are too many "nonsense" threads that achieve no purpose other than to waste precious bandwidth?

Bush vs Kerry threads
USA vs World threads
How big is your pinkie? threads
How old are you? threads
What did you eat for dinner? threads
How do you pronounce... threads
Olympic Games threads
Where do you work? threads
Does your boss suck ? threads

etc. etc.

NOTE : it is a multiple option poll - select all your options before hitting submit

Yes I have participated in some of these threads but of late it seems like certain members are just starting one thread after another on silly useless questions that have nothing to do with audio in ANY way...

Why on earth would you want to know how old someone is or where they work etc.? Cant we get personal on a personal basis (via email / pm) ? Do we necessarily have to bog down the forums with all this junk?

I find that I am having to sift through TONS of useless threads to find what I want. IIRC I have also been guilty of starting threads of this nature in the past (including this thread)

How do you feel about this? Do you think it needs to be stopped? Do you feel it is doing us all any good? Do we have a right to use the bandwidth of this forums for useless information (if you think such information is useless at all)? Would you like to sift through a lot of useless information just to find those threads that are really interesting and related to audio?

Let me know how you feel...

Why does it matter to you? If you have a problem with it, ignore the threads. If the mods mind, they'll do something about it. They can remove any threads they want, and rightly so. Until then, people should be free to start threads, even if they are only for entertainment purposes. People come to head-fi not to just gather info, but to, well, communicate. (Sorry if I sound rude,
not trying to be) This reminds me of all those debates on "useless posting". I know they removed CI because of the crazyiness, but has it really reached that point? I mean in the member's forum that is. Which, is where we come to relax. If it has become a problem, I understand. But I don't think it's out of control.

At least they are good for our 20-posts-per-day members.

Kirosia - Do you think it is alright to use forum resources for your relaxation? I am just brainstorming here. Dont you feel that all this might get in the way of people who come to HeadFi for what it really stands for? A source of audio-related information.

When I browse - I like to click the "View New Posts" button. No point in telling me not to do this because it is my right to click that button...I like using it...it is a feature of the forums and the forums is for the people who want to find out more about audio.

But when I click that button I see all these politics related threads, general threads that are just there for good old fashioned fun - Threads that mean NOTHING to what I want to achieve.

This is just my opinion. I have no problems if this trend continues and I am not trying to end it here (I doubt that will happen).

The truth is - I am seeing lesser and lesser posts from experienced individuals about critical listening, gear reviews, music reviews etc. and I am seeing more and more garbage.

That worries me...

Sounds like spending less time in the members lounge would solve most of your issues.
Is bandwidth really an issue? Maybe it is but I don't get that impression. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.
I think it's kinda cool that people who came together because of a common interest (audio) can find other things to talk about. It makes this more of a community. Yes, I know, there are other forums where one can talk about politics, etc., but really, this is the only internet forum I spend any time on and I don't always want to read/talk about audio. I feel like some of the people I've communicated w/ here are "friends"' even I've only met one and talked on the phone with two. Sometimes you just wanna hang w/ friends, ya know.
I don't have any trouble ignoring "nonsense" threads, even if I do have to wade through a bit of chaff.
I can understand your point of view too. I just don't feel the same way about it I guess.

Useless? It's just normal talk. Chitchat, if you will. If you feel that this "useless" discussions are wasting bandwidth, then you could just as easily argue that almost everything you say is a waste of breath. It's not our position to dictate, or even worry about, what should be appropriate on this forum; that is Jude's business. Meanwhile, I take the fact that we have a separate subforum named "Member's Lounge (General Discussion)" to mean that we can discuss these types of stuff here, and I don't find anything wrong with it either.

The problem is I like to use the "Vew New Posts" every now and then to catch up with what I missed when I was at work or doing something else. I cant escape the garbage when I do this. I really like this feature...makes things easier for me (made things easier for me until all these threads started popping up like the FOTM

I honestly wouldnt know the state of affairs of HeadFi but Bandwidth is ALWAYS an issue. You can never have too much bandwidth. More than bandwidth it is the database that needs to be taken into consideration. All this junk is getting stored somewhere and it is totally useless from a HeadFi Audio point of view.

Thats my only gripe - the ease of use has been taken away from me, Time is being wasted and resources are being abused.

Other than that I am open to ideas and member's opinions that could change the way I look at this problem.

Yes - I consider it a problem and the polls so far seem to suggest the same.

Cheers!

There "are" too many throwaway inane threads at the moment and not enough "quality" inane threads..... Quality inane threads are great but "how often do you clip your toenails?" type of posts have no interest to me so I tend not to respond to them.

Having said that, I'd rather read about peoples shoe size than read about the Sennheiser "veil" (yawn)

I'm all for good quality Inane banter but threads like "how old are you?" "how often do you fart in a day?" "how many times a day do you pick your nose" "do you pick and flick" etc. etc. are just bad taste IMO

On a serious note, anyone who posts thousands of purely Hi-Fi related threads here on a daily basis for years and years must be going mad..... there's a limit to how much "quality" you can contribute to Head-Fi in an audio related sense. I've contributed quite a lot of crap but (I'd like to think) I have also contributed a few good Hi-Fi related posts.

Take athletes as an example......... if the athletes did nothing but compete 24/7 365 days a year they would last a few weeks...... they need rest days and time in between competing to gather their thoughts..... The Members lounge is a good place to talk about other things other than "Hi-Fi" ....a place to go and remain part of Head-Fi without feeling compelled to post crap in the Hi-Fi section just to remain in the ballpark.

I think most of the rubbish posts are from newbies who are racing to become a headphoneus supremus......... I've never agreed with that title and we should all be classed as members........ trust me, that would cut down on the one liner posts and a "members" true worth to head-fi would become evident from the quality of his (her) posts.

Abolish "headphoneus Supremus" and Head-Fi will return to quality posts, across the board, instantly.......... make the buggers work for the respect

This is the general discussion forum where anything goes. If is it useless enough, people won't respond and it will fall off of the page. Let nature take its course. What is nonsense to you, may be interesting to others. The Olympics only happen every 2-4 years, I don't see how this could be nonsense? What do you suggest we talk about? The only threads that I don't understand is all of the birthday threads, but I just don't read them. Others enjoy them and post to them, so who am I to complain.

Thanks for the input people. Point noted about the Olympics. My point is - I am sure there is a separate forum for the olympics. They sure as hell dont discuss Headphones there...why should the opposite be true?

Just brainstorming again...dont be mad at me - Im just trying to understand why an audio forums has so much "other" stuff being discussed using up bandwidth and database memory...

Cheers!
