Tomahawk-UM2 High or Low gain?

it really depends on the recording.
i find with my westone um2s and es2s the tomahawk most of the time works well on low gain, but there are some recordings you do need hi gain. also, another factor with um2s is how noisy the environment is.

Low gain for me.
But I have to admit that I have not performed any serious comparison between the high amd low gain settings.

how much of the hiss goes away with a tomahawk?
i've tried the potentiometer thing with my ifp-799, and it my um2's still hiss

I like aluren's answer. Since I learned of this elsewhere on here a couple weeks ago, my Portaphile and my Hornet are set on hi gain. Seems the sound becomes more "full" or spacious with either Etys or Beyer 990s. Plus you aren't having to fiddle around with switches

Agreed. Doesn't make logical sense - should be same EQ, just different volume - but it works for me. Does remove easier volume controlling, though.

No way....there is WAAAAYYYY more punch in high gain. It's not just volume.

I ran mine in high gain. Even with the more volume knob movement in low gain, the music wasn't anywhere nearly as enaging.

Regardless of the gain setting I had, there was hiss with the Tomahawk with UM2s.

I'm thinking it's because that circuit isn't COMPLETELY closed on the TH, I noticed I didn't have the power on yet with my source playing music, and there was still VERY audible music coming through the headphones. Granted it sounded like you were underwater with it being muffled, distorted and blah, but fact was, you could still hear sound.

On my XP, it's DEAD SILENT with UM2s, and there is no sound when the amp isn't on.

In either case, high gain.
