Tolkien fans (Warning: LOTR: Two Towers spoilers inside)

This is exactly why I have no interest in films of my favorite books and no interest in videos of my favorite music. My favorite books and videos are the artform itself and their later films and videos mere sad immitations and interpretations. The best films and videos for me are of books I have not read before or music I have not heard before. It is rare indeed that a film or music video equakls or supasses its source. [Although this is saying nothing about the occasional rare good music video which was originally conceived as such.] I am now re-reading the two Tolkein classics after 35 years and finding the language and imagery as refreshing and fantastic as ever.

Has anyone noticed that the battle in The Two Towers is utterly illogical in terms of strategy? To paraphrase my print-pal Colin R., if Kurosawa still lived and were forced to watch that scene, he'd commit ritual seppuku.

And how exactly does a certain party know his forces will reach the battlefield in time to attack precisely at sunrise?

Because sir...he is one of the timeless...able to see beyond seeing...and do what ordinary men can only dream of.

He was appointed power for that age and when that aged passed, so did his duty and power.

Or plainly - he's a near omnipotent wizard.

Hey, if you don't want to wait and starve them out and don't care about how many of your forces die a full-frontal attack fits the bill. It isn't highly strategic, but there is an underlying logic to it: throw as much at the enemy as you can and hope they can't defend aganst the shear numbers.

As for Gandalf, who knows, maybe he got there during the night and waited for sunrise so the riders wouldn't get ripped to shreds.

When you don't particularly care about the lives of your troops, full frontal assault works the best. Short and sweet and to the point, no sense in drawing things out. Blitzkrieg does work. Also, sometimes you don't want to tie up all your troops in one place when you could be out conquering other provinces and time is of essence. There are obviously more factors than just minimizing casualties on either side.

How did Gandalf arrive at sunrise? Ever heard of logistics?

And remember that they didn't know about Gandolf or the elf reinforcements. Without them in the picture, they would have had such clear numerical superiority that a full-frontal assault, assuming that time is of the essence, would be efficient. It isn't the greatest strategy but it is semi-reasonable.

Besides that if villians used great strategies then we'd never have had more than one Bond movie.

The army of orcs has been percieved as having one and only one purpose in existance, and that was to take out helms deep. So what if it's not realisitic, after all, wouldn't saurman just use his magic to destroy the town then?

I'm the most open-minded person I know, knowing my own opinions aren't widely shared, and allowing others to look and feel whatever they want (excluding violence - let's have some sense here) -

Except when it comes to one thing: Yeah, the LOTR movies and books are different. You can't film books word for word, and at any rate, I don't want to see things that won't make sense on screen. (Lots of the confusion people have is answered in the LOTR Appendix BTW) -

But I have to confess - I feel that people who don't like one or the other - or both - well, those people are just idiots and there's nothing you can do about them.

It's something I just can't help feeling. I've tried to be open-minded, but I just don't understand those people who don't get it. I'm not proud of my closed-mindedness, I'm just saying it's there.

For those that hate LOTR (either books or the PJ movies) - then I'm sorry if I offended you. Maybe it's one of those subjects we shouldn't talk about, like religion or politics.

i have a DVD of Two Tower my friend made for me, it looks nearly as good as a regular DVD and he even made a menu. i've seen it in the theatre twice - it was awesome of course. i'm taking my girlfriend to see it on the big screen one more time.

i hope the success of LOTR prompts other epics to prouction. The Matrix, while not of the same caliber, has 2 sequels coming out this year that were filmed together like LOTR.

Epic's I'd like to see, but I'm probably the only one..

Colleen McCullough's Master's of Rome series, or at the very least, that material which cover's Caesar.

Instead of the musical Phantom, a movie based off of Susan Kay's Phantom.

And while we're at it, PJ can do The Hobbit.
